California Polytechnic State University is a public university in San Luis Obispo, California. It is one of two polytechnics in the California State University system.
The university is organized into six colleges offering 65 bachelor's and 39 master's degrees. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo primarily focuses on undergraduate education
and as of fall 2018 Cal Poly has 21,037 undergraduate and 775 graduate students.

The Brief History of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was established as the California Polytechnic School in 1901 when Governor Henry T. Gage signed the California Polytechnic School Bill
after a campaign by journalist Myron Angel. The polytechnic school held its first classes on October 1, 1903 to 20 students, offering secondary level courses of study,
which took three years to complete. The school continued to grow steadily, except during a period from the mid 1910s to the early 1920s when World War I led to drops in enrollment
and drastic budget cuts forced fewer class offerings.
In 1924, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was placed under the control of the California State Board of Education.
In 1933, the Board of Education changed Cal Poly San Luis Obispo into a two-year technical and vocational school. The institution began to offer Bachelor of Arts degrees in 1940,
with the first baccalaureate exercises held in 1942.
The school was renamed the California State Polytechnic College in 1947 to better reflect its higher education offerings,
and in 1949, a Master of Arts degree in education was added. In 1960, control of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and all other state colleges was transferred from the State Board of Education
to an independent Board of Trustees, which later became the California State University system.
The college was authorized to offer Master of Science degrees in 1967, and from then to 1970, the school's curriculum was reorganized into different units, such as the School of Science and Math,
the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and the School of Architecture.

Robert Lee "Hoot" Gibson (born October 30, 1946), (Capt, USN, Ret.), is a former American naval officer and aviator, test pilot, aeronautical engineer, and a retired NASA astronaut,
as well as a professional pilot who currently races regularly at the annual Reno Air Races.
Born October 30, 1946, in Cooperstown, New York, but considers
the Lakewood area of east Long Beach, California, to be his hometown. On May 30, 1981, he married fellow astronaut, Dr. M. Rhea Seddon of Murfreesboro, Tennessee,
and has four children.
He enjoys home-built aircraft, Formula One Air Racing, Unlimited Class Air Racing, running and surfing during his free time.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from California Polytechnic State University in 1969.
Victor J. Glover, Jr. was selected as an astronaut in 2013 while serving as a Legislative Fellow in the United States Senate.
He is currently training for Crew-1, the first post-certification mission of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft – the second crewed flight for that vehicle –
and a long duration mission aboard the International Space Station.
Glover and his crewmates are working closely with SpaceX to develop their new spacecraft systems,
which will provide roundtrip crew transportation services to the International Space Station and, along with Boeing’s Starliner,
return the ability to launch humans into space from United States soil. Glover holds degrees from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo,
Air University and Naval Postgraduate School. Glover is a member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.
Frederick Wilford "Rick"/"CJ" Sturckow (born August 11, 1961) is an engineer, retired United States Marine Corps officer, former NASA astronaut, and commercial spacecraft pilot.
Sturckow is a veteran of four Space Shuttle missions.
He flew on STS-88 and STS-105 as a pilot and STS-117 and STS-128 as a commander.
All four missions docked with the International Space Station, making Sturckow one of two people to visit the station four times. Sturckow later was assigned to the Johnson Space Center as a CAPCOM.
He left NASA in 2013 to become a pilot for Virgin Galactic. Sturckow was born La Mesa, California, but considers Lakeside, California, to be his hometown.
He is married to the former Michele A. Street of Great Mills, Maryland. He enjoys flying and physical training.
Gregory Errol Chamitof (born 6 August 1962 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada) is an engineer and former NASA astronaut. He has been to space twice, spending 6 months aboard the ISS across Expedition 17 and 18 in 2008,
and another 15 days as part of STS-134 in 2011. STS-134 was the last of Space Shuttle Endeavour which delivered the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer and completed the US Orbital Segment.
In 2008, Chamitoff voted from outer space; he also conducted a live-from-space satelite chat with students attending school in London.
As an undergraduate student at Cal Poly, Chamitoff taught lab courses in circuit design and worked summer internships at Four Phase Systems, Atari Computers, Northern Telecom, and IBM.
He performed stability analyses for the deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope.
Bachelor's Projects
All undergraduate students at Cal Poly are required to complete a senior project.
The senior project is intended to be a capstone experience for students receiving a baccalaureate degree by integrating theory and application
from across a student's undergraduate educational experiences.
The senior project consists of one or more of the following: a design or construction experience,
an experiment, a self-guided study or research project, a presentation, a report based on internship, co-op, or service learning experience,
and/or a public portfolio display or performance.
Senior projects have often led to students obtaining jobs or recognition for their work.
In July 2011, a company created from a Senior Project, Punchd, was acquired by Google.
Jamba Juice, founded as "Juice Club", was inspired by the Senior Project idea, but was founded after the founders had graduated.
